Microsoft improves touch keyboard settings for Windows 11

Microsoft has released another preview update for Windows 11 on the Dev Channel. New touch keyboard settings, a Microsoft Store update with ads, and many improvements will be presented.

Testing in the development branch of Sun Valley 3

The build is numbered 25188 and belongs to the development arm of Sun Valley 3, Windows 11 version 23H2. This update is expected to launch for all users in the late summer or fall of 2023. However, the content of the preview versions could be released much earlier.

New Build 25188 now launches new Windows touch keyboard setup options for the first select insiders. It’s all about basic settings whether the touch keyboard is displayed or not. This is also the most important change for this preview. An overview of all improvements can be found in the Windows Insider blog.

From the release notes: Updated Touch Keyboard Settings

We’re testing a new touch keyboard setting that replaces the “Show touch keyboard when no keyboard is connected” checkbox in Settings > Time & Language > Typing > Touch Keyboard with a new drop-down menu with three options that let you choose whether to activate the touch keyboard when you press an edit item taps:

  • “Never” suppresses the touch keyboard, even if no hardware keyboard is connected.
  • “If no keyboard is connected” displays the touch keyboard only when the device is used as a tablet without a hardware keyboard.
  • “Always” shows the touch keyboard even if the hardware keyboard is connected.

In addition, Microsoft has set the Windows Terminal as the new default terminal. An update to the Microsoft Store introduces the previously featured ads in the store’s search results.
Discreetly marked: This is what the Microsoft Store ad should look like.

Other changes include bug fixes and optimizations. For example, issues related to the .NET Framework 3.5 were fixed and a bug in the taskbar that affected the reliability of explorer.exe was fixed. For this, Microsoft has been introducing new features and improvements for weeks.

If you want to try out the new preview version, you can do so with a recently released ISO package. These ISOs are specifically released to registered Windows Insiders to aid in testing and enable a clean install.
