Microsoft is significantly expanding the Xbox app for Android

Microsoft is expanding the Xbox app for Android: From November 2024, users will be able to buy games directly and play them via cloud gaming. This innovation follows a US court ruling against Google’s app store monopoly and could change the mobile gaming market.

Xbox revolution on Android devices

Sarah Bond, President of Xbox, explained: “The court decision to open Google’s mobile store in the US will enable more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to enable more players to play on more devices.” This development marks a significant step forward in Microsoft’s strategy to expand its gaming services to mobile platforms.

The ability to buy and play Xbox games directly from the Android app results from a court ruling against Google. A US court has ruled that Google’s Play Store constitutes an illegal monopoly. From November 1, 2024, Google will no longer be able to force developers to use the in-house payment system. The tech giant also has to allow competing app stores in the Play Store.

This decision opens the door for companies like Microsoft to implement their own payment systems in Android apps. So far, the Redmond-based company has apparently not been able to sell Xbox games directly in the Android app, while competitors such as Steam and the PlayStation Store were already offering this.

Impact on mobile gaming

Integrating game purchases and streaming into the Xbox app could significantly improve the mobile gaming experience. Users can purchase a game and stream it instantly on their smartphone or tablet thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming. This makes the process seamless and could increase the appeal of the Xbox ecosystem for mobile gamers.

However, it remains to be seen how Google will react to this development. The company has already announced that it will appeal the ruling. It is currently unclear whether this will affect Microsoft’s plans for November. The same applies to the possible worldwide expansion of the planned Xbox app functions – a German launch is uncertain. The expansion of the Xbox app is also just part of Microsoft’s larger mobile strategy.

The company is also working on a browser-based Xbox Mobile Store. Originally planned for July 2024, the launch was delayed. The store will initially launch with first-party titles such as Minecraft and Candy Crush and will later be opened up to third-party games.
