Microsoft To Block Older Versions Of Outlook In Microsoft 365 Cloud

Microsoft will soon block Outlook 2010 and earlier versions from connecting to Microsoft 365 Exchange servers. As of November, only newer versions will be able to connect to a Microsoft 365 Exchange server in the cloud.

According to the report which pertains to an announcement in the Microsoft TechCommunity. It says that after November 1, 2021, only Outlook 2013 with Service Pack 1 (with the latest corrections) and later versions will be able to connect to Microsoft 365 services. The reason for this is security concerns. Microsoft is therefore changing the requirements.

The fact that companies are often very slow when it comes to updating their software is nothing new. Accordingly, such new requirements take many unprepared, Microsoft also knows that. Nevertheless, for security reasons you have to act now, according to the TechCommunity. Older Outlook versions such as Outlook 2007 and 2010 will no longer be compatible with the following upcoming service changes from Microsoft. Microsoft informs as follows:

  • Support for basic authentication ends to increase the security of Microsoft 365 by resorting to modern authentication protocols that are not only more secure but also provide compliance and policy controls to help you manage your data.
  • Microsoft is working on adding support for HTTP / 2 in Microsoft 365. HTTP / 2 is a full-duplex protocol that reduces latency through header compression and request multiplexing.
  • Microsoft advises that the new clients are more secure, have many new features, and result in 75 percent fewer crashes.
