Minecraft Legends: Action Real-time Strategy Game is ready for 2023 release

Developed by former Blizzard employees, the RTS Stormgate isn’t the only title of its genre to be announced at Summer Game Fest 2022 to build on past successes. This time, however, it is not about StarCraft and Warcraft, but about Minecraft.

Attack of the Pig People from Hell

As part of the Xbox & Bethesda Game Showcase, Microsoft and Mojang presented Minecraft Legends, the next spin-off of the survival adventure. The latter got an update a few days ago with mangrove trees, frogs, and mud, while the real-time strategy game is all about defending the overworld against attacking monsters from the Nether. A trailer gives a first impression, although the video shows little gameplay. To fend off Piglin’s invasion and defend villages, players form alliances with all kinds of mobs; among them would be numerous acquaintances. Mojang is developing Minecraft Legends in collaboration with Blackbird Interactive, a Canadian studio currently also working on the RTS Homeworld 3.

Interested parties should not expect a fully classic real-time strategy experience; Mojang himself speaks of an action RTS. The player is always at the center of the action, fighting side by side with allies and commanding them from a third-person perspective. Since Minecraft Legends will be released not only for PC, but also for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch consoles, such access controls are obvious: the title should be at least as easy to play with controllers such as mouse and keyboard.

Multiplayer and co-op for the campaign

Furthermore, Microsoft and Mojang promise a competitive multiplayer mode and a co-op mode for the entire campaign. Minecraft Legends should offer an interesting story with a few twists, but the developers won’t reveal more than that, more information can be expected in the coming months.

However, it can be safely assumed that the game will be available as part of the Game Pass when it is released. Minecraft Legends follows the spin-offs Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth. The former was presented at E3 2019 and is still being updated with new content, while the latter was discontinued in the summer of 2021.
