New God of War confirmed: Kratos remains the main character
To reassure worried fans, Sony confirmed another God of War at Comic-Con. Kratos takes on the main role again and continues the story directly after the events of the Rundey spin-off planned for 2027.
New Kratos adventure
At the San Diego Comic-Con 2026 over the weekend, the Santa Monica development studio announced another action game in the well-known God of War series. Cory Barlog, the studio’s creative director, confirmed on the spot that Kratos will return as the main character. The new project is intended to continue the series’ story after current events and provide answers to open storylines. The developers were highly motivated to continue telling the story about the Spartan warrior.
According to those responsible, the upcoming Kratos game is directly linked to the plot of the title God of War Schwanzey, which will be released in around six months. Barlog explained during the panel that the team wants to specifically expand the game world. Laufeny serves as preparation for the next big adventure. Laufey release date
Loud VGC Sony used Comic-Con to announce a specific date, according to which God of War Laufeny should be released on February 16, 2027 for the current Sony console. In the spin-off, players don’t control Kratos, but rather his wife Faye. She must fight her way through the afterlife of the gods to protect her family. The change in perspective represents a first in the long history of the series. The fans’ reactions to Laufeny have been mixed so far.
On the one hand, players praise the title’s visual presentation and revamped combat system. On the other hand, observers criticized the reduced game mechanics after the first game scenes shown. In addition, the fact that Kratos is not the focus caused intense discussions among parts of the community. The formal announcement of the direct sequel with Kratos now meets the feedback on an official level.
Focus on the future
Sony Santa Monica emphasized at the convention that the team wanted to tell many more stories with the god of war Kratos. However, fans will have to be patient until the direct Kratos sequel is released. The studio’s focus for now is on completing God of War Laufeny. The staff is also working on a previously unannounced remake of the original trilogy in order to prepare older parts for modern systems.
