New Google Chromecast streaming stick with Google TV

After Google presented the last generation Chromecast in September 2020, the manufacturer now seems to be working on a new streaming stick. The next model will be developed under the code name Boreal and will be based on the Google TV user interface. if 9to5google writes, the codename ‘Boreal’ appears in documentation and some APK files. The designation should mainly appear in connection with Google TV, so that a new Chromecast model can be assumed. The code name is also mentioned in the same family as ‘Sabrina’, denoting the currently available generation. The new Chromecast could be launched as early as 2022.

AV1 codec support probably coming

What hardware will be used in the fifth Chromecast generation remains open. It is speculated that the built-in CPU has significantly more power than the processor of the previous model. After all, the new streaming stick must be able to compete with the Amazon Fire TV sticks, Nvidia Shield TV and Apple TV.

The upcoming Chromecast should have AV1 support and thus achieve better picture quality without the need for a higher transfer rate. Conversely, it must be possible to reduce data traffic while maintaining the same quality. There is no exact release date for the future Chromecast model yet. It is conceivable that the streaming stick will be presented in the fall together with the Google Pixel 7. The device may also be shown earlier as part of the Pixel 6a presentation. The new mid-range smartphone could already see the light of day in the spring. Google will likely announce the event in the coming weeks.
