Nintendo Switch 2: First problems with the battery surfaced

A few days after the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, users report on a curious battery problem. The display does not match the actual term. Nintendo has reacted and reveals how the problem can be fixed.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has only been on the market since June 5, 2025, but a few days after the launch, numerous owners report on a curious problem: the battery display of the new console does not match the actual battery life.

For some users, for example, the console shows a critically low battery level, but continues for hours. In other cases, the display suddenly jumps from one value to another. The problem occurred on the day of publication. A user on Reddit reported that after reaching one percent battery level, his console continued another 30 minutes before it switched off. Nintendo now has the problem officially confirmed and two solutions published. The Nintendo Switch 2 is now available in stores

Fast solution via recovery mode

Nintendo first recommends a simple method to reset the battery display. This includes access to the console recovery mode:

• Make sure you use a sufficiently powerful power supply (e.g. Nintendo Model NGN-01)
• Check whether the latest firmware is installed
• Switch off the Nintendo Switch 2
• Hold the volume buttons (+ and -) and press the power button once
• Keep the volume buttons press until the recovery menu appears
• Switch off the console again by pressing the power button for a long time
• Start the Switch 2 Normally

According to Nintendo, this fast process should reset the battery display. Players and various media have confirmed that this method works – in a test, the charge rose from 82 to 89 percent.

Alternative for stubborn cases

If the first method does not work, Nintendo offers a second, more time -consuming solution:

• Make sure that the latest firmware is installed
• Place all automatic rest mode settings on “Never” (settings -> rest mode)
• Connect the power supply directly to the console, not via dock
• Charge the console to or at least three hours
• Let the console connected to the power supply for another hour
• Separate the power supply and leave the console in the home menu until the battery is almost empty
• Switch off the console and let it rest for at least 30 minutes
• Repeat these steps several times

According to Nintendo, the battery display is gradually improving this process by repeating this process. If both methods do not lead to success, the only way to get the way through Nintendo’s repair service remains.

Battery: Switch 2 technical data

The Switch 2 has a 5220 mAh lithium-ion battery, which is therefore larger than the 4310 mAh battery of the previous models. According to Nintendo, the battery life should be between two and 6.5 hours – a very wide range that depends on various factors. These include the game type, the use of the game chat with or without a camera and the mouse mode in tabletop mode.

The battery life of the Switch 2 is somewhat worse than that of the original switch model, which offered between 2.5 and 6.5 hours when it was launched in 2017. Later revisions of the first Switch even improved the battery life to 4.5 to nine hours. This deterioration is mainly due to the much more powerful hardware of the Switch 2, which results in higher energy consumption.

Tips for battery care

For the long -term health of the battery, experts recommend activate the setting “Stop loading at around 90 percent” (settings -> console). Limiting the battery charge to 90 percent has a positive effect on the long -term health of the battery.

The constant charging of a lithium battery to 100 percent reduces its capacity over time. In addition, you should avoid your Nintendo Switch 2 completely discharged. These measures can help extend the lifespan of the battery. It remains to be seen whether Nintendo will offer a permanent solution in a future firmware update.
