Nintendo Switch 2 production apparently started, name is set

Nintendo could soon unveil the successor to the Switch. New leaks indicate that production has already started and the name has already been decided. However, this is not a surprise, as the new console is said to be called Nintendo Switch 2.

The gaming world is eagerly awaiting news about Nintendo’s next console generation. Now there are increasing indications that production of the Switch successor is already in full swing. According to a Famiboard user named fwd-bwd (via Reddit and Wccftech), which refers to a Chinese forum post, production in China is said to have recently begun. The leak also suggests that Nintendo is sticking to the tried and tested brand name.

The new console will actually simply be called Nintendo Switch 2 and will have a corresponding logo on the side. However, this would be quite unusual for the Japanese manufacturer, as the company has usually chosen completely new names for new console generations. Technical details are still unclear

There are many rumors about the technical specifications, but hardly any concrete information. The current leak suggests a slightly larger housing with narrower screen edges. The included Joy-Con controllers are said to be black and white, similar to the OLED model of the current Switch. Other sources speculate about improved hardware components:

An Nvidia Tegra T239 chip with an 8-core CPU and a significantly more powerful GPU could be used. There is also talk of twelve gigabytes of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Technologies such as DLSS and ray tracing are also said to be supported.

Backward compatibility

Good news for owners of the current Switch: According to industry observers, Nintendo plans to make the new console backwards compatible. Both cartridges and digitally purchased games from the first Switch generation should run on the successor.

Some titles could even benefit from the more powerful hardware and support higher resolution or better frame rates. Despite the many rumors and leaks, an official confirmation from Nintendo is still pending. Industry insiders, however, expect that the company could unveil the new console this year.
