No Stargate return: Prime Video is canceling the planned series

Amazon has officially stopped development of the new Stargate series with showrunner Martin Gero. The project was intended to continue the previous story and now failed due to concerns that the target group was too small for the streaming service.
Out for new sci-fi series
Amazon MGM Studios has stopped developing the planned series in the Stargate universe. The project, led by showrunner Martin Gero, was already in pre-production, but those responsible at Prime Video ended the project. The production was only announced in November 2025. Gero, who had already worked as a writer for previous spin-offs such as Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, planned a direct continuation of the existing storyline. He wanted to build on the established story rather than attempt a complete reboot. The concept was to take up the mythology of the military science fiction series, in which people travel to foreign planets through ancient ring portals.
Worry about the target group being too small
Like the industry magazine Variety reported that the reasons for the cancellation lay in creative differences. The streaming provider’s executives feared that the series’ direction would not appeal to a wide audience outside of its existing fan base. A strong focus on long-time connoisseurs ran the risk of deterring newcomers. The cancellation temporarily ends the hope of new material for the franchise, which began in 1994 with the film by Roland Emmerich. In the years that followed, the brand produced three major television series and two films. In total, the universe includes over 350 episodes. The studio can now focus on concepts that work independently of previous history. In addition, personnel restructuring at Amazon MGM Studios made implementation more difficult. Executives who initially supported the project left the company in recent months.
The new leaders saw the creative vision as no longer in line with the overall program strategy. Revising the script was not enough to bridge the differences. Despite the current stop, Amazon still plans to use the Stargate brand. The company acquired the rights through the acquisition of the film studio MGM and is now looking for ways to revive the universe. Martin Gero will remain with the studio through an existing framework agreement and will develop other projects for the group in the future.
