Now You Can Share Accounts On Netflix With Little Extra Cost

It was already indicated that something new will soon be coming from streaming provider Netflix in the field of account sharing. Now the service is launching the ability to add users with their own profile who do not live in the same household as the account owner. However, this new feature costs extra and is available as a test in selected countries. The test runs for Netflix-approved account sharing were discovered by, among others, Variation online magazine Netflix has in one short blog post explaining the new option for accounts. There are two new features for accounts.

Netflix is testing profile transfers to new accounts

Netflix is testing a feature that makes it possible to transfer a profile to a brand new account. This allows users who previously used a subscription from, for example, a friend, to switch to their own subscription with their previous profile and history. However, variant two is more interesting. Netflix allows you to add subaccounts for people you don’t live with. Each subscription can add up to two additional subaccounts. This capability is currently being tested in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. The price is CLP 2,380 in Chile, $2.99 in Costa Rica, and PEN 7.9 in Peru, according to Netflix.

Paid Sub Accounts

This allows users to keep their Watch History, My List, and Recommendations when they complete the transfer to a new account. The first test of such paid sub-accounts ran last year with a few selected accounts. The test is now being expanded and will be offered to all users in the three countries. Changes in other countries are not currently planned but are likely to be implemented if this test is well received by users.

Netflix writes extensively about the offer:

  • Pay to unblock Netflix outdoors:
  • We’ve always made it easy for people living together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams on our Standard and Premium plans. While these features are hugely popular, they have also caused confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are shared between households, which affects our ability to invest in great new TV shows and movies for our members.
  • That’s why we’ve spent the past year working on ways to make it easy and secure for members who use Netflix outside of the home to do so, while also paying a little more. And in the coming weeks we will be rolling out and testing two new features for our members in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.
  • Add an additional member: Members of our Standard and Premium plans can add subaccounts for up to two people they don’t live with – each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password – at a lower price: CLP 2,380 in Chile, $2.99 in Costa Rica and PEN 7.9 in Peru.
  • Transfer profile to a new account: Members of our Basic, Standard and Premium plans can give people who share their account with them the option to transfer their profile information to a new account or an Additional Member sub-account – while retaining history, list and personalized recommendations.
