OnePlus Now Justifies Deliberate Slowing Down Of Smartphones

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are actually high-end smartphones with the latest hardware, but it has now become known that the manufacturer artificially slows down a number of popular apps. The company has now commented on this – and confirmed and even defended the rigorous intervention, which was also carried out via an update.

As OnePlus announced in a statement, the changes to the handling of various apps on the affected devices were only made after the market launch of the OnePlus 9 series in March. Since then, the company has received various feedback from users who would have liked to see improvements in terms of battery life and heat management.

Optimization For User Experience?

In response to this feedback, the OnePlus development team has been working on optimizing the devices’ performance when using around 300 of the most popular apps over the past few months. They are trying to meet the apps’ needs in terms of processor performance by providing sufficient power. This is to provide a smooth user experience while reducing power consumption.

This could involve degradation of the devices’ performance in certain benchmarks, but there are reported benefits for users in the end. Previously, AnandTech found out during thorough investigations that OnePlus keeps a kind of blacklist of apps that reduce the CPU performance during longer use. As mentioned, the manufacturer now justifies this with an optimization of the user experience.

The interventions are rigorous, so some apps simply do not use the hardware’s full performance anymore. At the same time, OnePlus tries to compensate for the reduction in CPU performance with measures like frame and touch boosters. The company is now criticized for making the changes long after the market launch and not offering a way for users to stop the sometimes violent interference in the operation of popular apps.

Among others, programs like Chrome, Twitter, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Discord, Firefox, and the Microsoft Office suite are affected by the performance brake. Smartphone, OnePlus, OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro 5G, OnePlus 9 5GOnePlus
