New AI powerhouse: OpenAI reveals o1 model
OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, has now released the first major updates at its 12-day surprise events: With the introduction of the new o1 model and an exclusive ChatGPT Pro subscription, the AI pioneer is setting new standards for artificial intelligence.
The o1 model, previously only available as a preview, has now officially launched and promises significant improvements over its predecessors. o1 is said to be faster and more versatile than previous versions, as well as being more adaptive and “intelligent”. It can handle images, code and text equally and shows up to three times faster than the preview version in sample tasks.
According to OpenAI, the model has improved the ability to actually “think” before generating answers – an advance that should significantly increase the quality and reliability of the results produced. OpenAI announced in its “12 Days of OpenAI” livestream event on December 5 that the new model will be available in two variants. The standard version of o1 is included in the existing ChatGPT Plus subscription for $20 per month. OpenAI is introducing a new premium offering – ChatGPT Pro, which offers unlimited access to the Pro version of the o1 model for $200 per month.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasizes that the Pro version uses more computing power to achieve better results on complex tasks. According to OpenAI, this mode performs particularly well in the areas of data science, programming and legal analysis. The offer is aimed primarily at researchers, engineers and professional users who need advanced AI intelligence on a daily basis.
Improved performance and “reduced hallucinations”
But the o1 model can do even more. It performs better in tests than its predecessor, particularly in math competitions, programming tests, and doctoral-level science questions. Most importantly, the so-called hallucination rate, i.e. the tendency to generate false information, has been significantly reduced. For factual questions, the hallucination rate fell from 61 to 44 percent, while accuracy rose from 38 to 47 percent.
OpenAI attributes these improvements to new training using “chain-of-thought” methods. The model learns to carry out a longer thought process before answering. This allows for better fact checking and faster detection of unreliable information. The Pro account is available now.
