Oppo Teases Wireless Air Charging And Oppo X 2021

Oppo released a video teasing on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress MWC 2021 Shanghai which is being held virtually this week. In this video, the brand presents a wireless and contactless charging system, similar to Xiaomi’s Mi Air Charge.

And the demonstration is made with the Oppo X 2021, the famous prototype with a roll-up screen. What are the main disadvantages of wireless charging? First, it is slower than wired charging, although the maximum power of the Qi standard is getting closer and closer to charging over a USB Type-C cable. Then, it immobilizes the smartphone more: it must be placed on the charging plate.

With a USB cable, you can still grab the phone in your hand and use it within the cable length limit, of course, the solution to the problem of the immobilization of the smartphone would be to allow the battery to be charged at a distance of one meter or more. Wireless and contactless charging technologies have been around for several years. But no solution has yet been deployed to the general public.

We remember, for example, the Microsoft experiment called Auto charge. It dates from 2015. Obviously, this did not result in a commercial solution. We also remember the remote charging demonstrations of Energous during CES 2019.
