StarCraft becomes a shooter: New open-world game will be released in 2030

Blizzard is bringing the StarCraft universe back in 2030, but radically changing the genre. The new title says goodbye to the classic real-time strategy and instead becomes a purely single-player experience as an open-world shooter.

New genre for the universe

As part of BlizzCon 2026, a new game in the StarCraft universe was announced for 2030. The project, simply called StarCraft, breaks with the real-time strategy roots of its predecessors and is instead designed as an open-world shooter. The development is led by Dan Hay, who was previously responsible as a producer for the Far Cry series at Ubisoft.

The first trailer takes a dark tone and follows a Terran League recruit. The scenes shown illustrate the brutal reality of the war against the alien Zerg, in which human soldiers often only serve as disposable items. There are no real game scenes to be seen yet as the project is in an early development phase. Starcraft Trailer | Announce Cinematic | Dominion

Single player instead of live service

As Blizzard Entertainment confirms, the action takes place in the Koprulu Sector, exactly 70 years after the events of StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. This allows the authors to tell completely new stories and introduce changing political factions into the universe. Contrary to many current industry trends, the game foregoes a live service model or seasonal content. It’s a classic single-player experience with a clear beginning, middle and end. Players create their own character, equip them and explore the world at their own pace.

If a main mission is too demanding, equipment and resources can be collected in the open world. The gameplay allows you to slowly explore the environment and get involved in unexpected encounters. The structure is reminiscent of tried and tested open world concepts, but places them in a science fiction scenario.

Risk for loyal fans

Moving away from classic real-time strategy offers the potential to appeal to a much broader target group. Shooter mechanics coupled with an open world are often more accessible to the mass market than complex strategy titles. In addition, the project is thematically linked to the previously discontinued attempt StarCraft: Ghost.

At the same time, changing genres brings with it certain risks. Long-time fans of the series have been waiting for a real successor in the strategy area for over ten years and could be disappointed by the strong realignment. The targeted release in 2030 also requires an enormous amount of patience from the players. A strategy classic becomes an open-world shooter.
