PlayStation 6 Expected to Feature 24 GB RAM — But Is It Enough?

Experts expect Playstation 6 (PS6) to have 24 GB RAM. But is the RAM really enough to finally record it with gaming PCs? The answer is, among other things, in a surprising cost factor.

Why 24 GB RAM make sense

The PlayStation 6 is expected to appear in 2027 or 2028 (or only in 2029), but experts are already speculating on the technical specifications of the next Sony console. According to Digital Foundry’s technology experts, the PS6 could be equipped with 24 GB of RAM – a clear jump compared to the 16 GB or 18 GB of the current PS5 and PS5 Pro. Alexander Battaglia justified the assessment with the fact that the PS5 was already performing well with 16 GB RAM, but the additional memory is required for machine learning and improved Ray tracing.

The experts see 24 GB as a reasonable compromise, since the PS5 is already pushing its limits in textures and graphic assets. An important factor in the memory decision is the costs. The prices for dram are still high and have not recorded a significant decline in recent years, which will definitely be a limiting factor. 32 GB RAM would be desirable and comparable to gaming PC, but could be too expensive.

Also interesting: Sony recently commented on PlayStation 6. Now a well-known hardware leaker wants to have identified the APU of the next console of the Japanese. The AMD-Zen-6-Magnus chip is said to have eleven CPU cores and a whopping 80 Compute Units. Find out more now!

Handheld console influences decision

It is also interesting to refer to the rumored Playstation handheld. If the portable system is actually equipped with 16 GB RAM, 24 GB would make more sense for the home console if developers are to optimize games for both platforms. Sony had already gained experience in the handheld area with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the PlayStation Vita, but with mixed success.

A new attempt could benefit from the current popularity of the Steam deck and the Nintendo Switch 2. However, these speculations remain unconfirmed for the time being. So far, Sony has not officially commented on the specifications of PlayStation 6. As mentioned at the beginning, the assessments of digital foundry are based on market analyzes and technical trends, not on insider information.
