Qualcomm sheds light on various new products in the pipeline

snapdragon 8 Gen 2

The annual summit of Snapdragon is currently happening in Hawaii. Yesterday, was a big day for the company as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor was launched along with a keynote address. As of today, the company has something exciting to share.

Alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the company has introduced a variety of other products. These include the second-generation S5 and S3 sound platforms and Qualcomm Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1. Besides these products, the company shared some information about the next-gen cross platform CPU. The company has named this next-gen CPU platform Oryon.

Snapdragon S5 Gen 2 and S3 Gen 2

Some headphones and earbuds will now be provided with Qualcomm chips. The new devices will now be based on Snapdragon Sound branding. The company is focusing on enhancing spatial audio capabilities. This is for the first time that Snapdragon Sound will be introduced to speakers.

One of the most noticeable announcements here is concerning Dynamic Spatial Audio. It will support the feature of head-tracking. Thus, changing the sound dynamically as you change the position of your head or move around. Of course, this is quite interesting for gamers giving them a fully immersive experience. Furthermore, LE Audio, aptX Lossless Bluetooth, and enhanced adaptive noise cancellation staples are also included in the list.

For the first time, Snapdragon S5 Gen 2 and S3 Gen 2 chips are regulated for speakers. As of now, Qualcomm has not shared a word about the manufacturers or specific devices. But probably we should see the said products as of 2023.

Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1

The familiar Meta Quest Pro is a VR headset. It is powered by Qualcomm. Given the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1, Qualcomm is entering the field of augmented reality(AR).

This 4nm chip is particularly targeted for AR applications. It includes various products like smart glasses. Qualcomm plans to introduce AR glasses connected to a smartphone wirelessly. AR2 Gen 1 will share the amount of work between the chip [in the glasses] and [the processor] of the phone. thus, allowing for more processing power as well as battery life.

AR2 Gen 1 by Qualcomm is an attempt to resolve a bunch of issues associated with AR glasses face. AR2 Gen 1 is based on multiple chips. The chips are located as follows:

  • Main processor [in the arm of a pair of smart glasses]
  • AR Co-Processor: secondary processor [reside in the bridge of the glasses]
  • A connectivity chip [located in the other arm with Wi-Fi 7 capabilities]

The design appears appealing as it enhances the processing power as well as distributes the generated heat more evenly. Thus, limiting the requirement for long internal wires. Furthermore, size will be compromised compared to heavy and massive AR glasses. While making them appear like normal glasses.

Various companies like TCL, Oppo, Xiaomi, LG, Lenovo, and others are involved with this project. We can expect anything from industrial to commercial devices to dev kits. For now, just wait and see what we are presented with given this technology.

Qualcomm Oryon

Oryon is a new custom CPU core. It is based on the acquisition of Nuvia. It is expected to substitute the Kryo CPU. It will set off in the Snapdragon Compute arena. Besides 4G- and 5G-connected laptops and computer hardware by Qualcomm, Oryon is all set to take the game a level up.

As of now, the company has not been mentioned in detail about the Oryon. However, they mentioned that Oryon is going to be the initial step toward a one-platform solution. It appears like Qualcomm is trying to blend the processors across its supported hardware devices. Given this possibility, Oryon could be the first product featuring it.
