RDNA-3 GPU to Play Games in 8K on the Next Generation

Sony and Microsoft would like to present their next “facelift” game consoles as “next-gen” for games in 8K/UHD thanks to the RDNA-3 GPU, reports the Polish website PPE.pl, which also includes images and slides. from a press conference of the Chinese electronics group TCL published in Poland.

Facelift or already next-gen?

Like the Chinese company, which generated nearly $14 billion in 2021 with about 75,000 employees, and according to its CEO Li Dongsheng once “the Chinese should represent Sony or Samsung”, revealed in a presentation to industry representatives, the “upgrades” of the PlayStation 5 (test) and Xbox Series X (test) should have GPU performance at the level of the next generation of graphics cards that AMD can fall back on.

Radeon RX 7700 XT Performance

According to TLC, no less than performance is expected from the upcoming AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT, which will be allocated up to 10,240 ALUs based on the RDNA-3 GPU Navi 32, which is designed as a multi-chip module. Specifications (source)

  • Sony PlayStation 5 Pro
  • New Microsoft Xbox Series X and S
  • Rendering in 4K/2160p at 60-120 fps
  • Playback in 8K/4320p at 60-120 fps
  • Performance class of a Radeon RX 7700 XT

Even though the upcoming game consoles can fall back on the performance of a custom APU with an RDNA 3 GPU and thus play internally computed games at 4K in 8K, it’s less of a next-gen because the platform is the same and the games will run the same. on the regular PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In terms of performance, the “new” consoles would increase significantly.

TCL assumes that the game console makeover will be released between 2023 and 2024, during which time neither Sony nor Microsoft has said anything about a “Pro” console or a current generation “facelift”. The new game consoles should be classified as “Gen 9.5”.
