Reddit launches AI tool to search content on its own website

Reddit is launching “Reddit Answers,” an AI-supported search function that aims to provide users with precise answers from the community. The new tool is intended to improve the search for information on the platform, and Reddit also wants to directly compete with Google.

AI revolution at Reddit

The social media platform Reddit is taking a big step towards artificial intelligence. With the introduction of “Reddit Answers”, the company presents an AI-powered search function that could fundamentally change the user experience. The new feature promises to simplify and speed up the search for relevant information on Reddit.

Direct answers instead of endless searches

“Reddit Answers” works similarly to an AI tool that you can use to conduct conversations. Users can ask questions and then receive summarized answers generated directly from relevant Reddit posts and comments. The AI searches all public, adult-free subreddits and presents the results in a clear, easy-to-understand form.

The answers contain direct links to the original sources so that users can delve deeper into the topic if necessary. As Serkan Piantino, vice president of product at Reddit, said in one Blog post explained, the new feature aims to guide users to the actual content instead of generating a standalone answer. This distinguishes Reddit Answers from classic search engines and underlines the platform’s community-based approach, says Piantino.

Competition for Google?

With the introduction of Reddit Answers, the platform is positioning itself in the growing market of AI-powered information search. Many Internet users often add “Reddit” to their Google searches to find authentic opinions and testimonials. This practice may now become unnecessary as Reddit Answers provides an efficient way to find relevant information directly on the platform.

This development comes at a time when Reddit has restricted the use of its data by AI companies. At the beginning of the year, the platform announced that companies would no longer be allowed to scrape data from the site without licensing agreements. With Reddit Answers, Reddit now retains control of its undoubtedly valuable data and uses it for its own AI development.

An important aspect of Reddit Answers is its focus on product recommendations. Many of the suggested searches revolve around “best” products in various categories. This could or should open up interesting monetization opportunities in the future, although Reddit currently emphasizes that there are no immediate plans for this.

Gradual introduction planned

Reddit Answers will initially only be available to a limited number of users in the US and is initially limited to English and web versions as well as iOS devices. A wider rollout, including an Android version, is planned for next year.
