Excel update breaks Insert again

Mark cells, copy them, paste them elsewhere: This is part of everyday life in Excel. But after a security update, the insertion could fail. Microsoft has now confirmed the error.

A known error returns

The update KB5002934 has now been published in a revised version. Excel 2016 is affected – more precisely, the original build version 16.0.5574.1005 of the October update. The error does not occur across the board with every copying operation. According to Microsoft, insert operations may fail if the workbook contains conditional formatting. The company also confirms that the glitch has been reintroduced with the October update. In its support document, Microsoft refers to the update KB5002665 from September 16, 2026, which was already related to this problem.

This article originally referred to build 16.0.5574.1005. This version has now been updated to build 16.0.5574.1006. The new build includes all security updates for Microsoft Excel 2016 and also resolves the issue that reoccurred in 16.0.5574.1005, where paste operations could fail if the workbook contained conditional formatting. For a workaround, see the September 16, 2026 update for Excel 2016 (KB5002665). Microsoft Support

The glitch affects a fundamental function of the spreadsheet. Instead of continuing to process content as usual, users can get stuck when inserting it. The decisive factor is the specific workbook: Microsoft explicitly states that conditional formatting is included as a prerequisite for the possible error.

Same update number, new program version

Microsoft has not assigned a new KB number for the repair. Rather, the company revised KB5002934 and increased the included build version from 16.0.5574.1005 to 16.0.5574.1006. According to the support document, this new version fixes the recurring insertion error. At the same time, all security fixes in the update remain included. Anyone using the affected installation will recognize the corrected version by the build number 16.0.5574.1006 – the name KB5002934 alone does not distinguish between the incorrect and the repaired release.
