Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Specifications Released

Galaxy Watch 4

Samsung has presented the new Galaxy Watch 4 series, which offers a “Classic” model with a rotating physical bezel in addition to the normal version. The new smartwatches now use Google Wear OS and have a new processor under the hood.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are technically identical apart from the battery and the display size. The normal Watch4 is equipped with a 1.19-inch display, while the Classic model has a 1.4-inch panel. Both screens are circular and each uses OLED technology. The resolution is given as 396 x 396 or 450 x 450 pixels. Thanks to Gorilla Glass DX, the displays should be optimally protected against scratches.

Watch 4 operation only via touch, Classic also via bezel

While the standard model is operated only via the touchscreen and the two buttons on the side, the classic model can still be used to navigate using the rotating bezel. Under the hood in both cases is the new Samsung Exynos W920 dual-core SoC, which should offer longer runtimes with more performance at the same time. There are also 1.5 gigabytes of RAM and 16 GB of internal flash memory.

Further hardware equipment includes batteries with 240 and 361 mAh capacity, WLAN, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and optionally even 4G-LTE. The manufacturer offers the devices in sizes of 40 and 44mm for the standard model and 42 and 46mm in diameter. Depending on the variant, there are bracelets made of plastic or leather.

With the new Galaxy Watch 4 series, Samsung is converting its smartwatches from the in-house Tizen operating system to the newly developed version of Google Wear OS. You still use your own, a heavily customized interface called One UI Watch, but under the hood, there should now be more efficient software with broader app support.

In terms of fitness and health, they have also invested heavily. So there is now not only an EKG sensor, the possibility of determining the heart rate, but also a new measuring system called BIA, which should be able to record the physical characteristics of the user with great precision. As with a body fat scale, two electrodes are supposed to help determine the exact composition of the user’s body from fat and muscle mass.

For the first time, this so-called bioimpedance analysis can easily be used in everyday life apart from larger, usually more complicated hardware. The other fitness functions correspond to what is already known from the last generations of Samsung smartwatches. Of course, the new smartwatches are also waterproof to a depth of 50 meters and certified according to IP68.

Samsung is offering the Galaxy Watch 4 in Europe from August 27th at prices starting at 269 euros or $315, while the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will be available for prices starting at 369 euros or $435. If you want to use LTE, you have to accept a relatively small surcharge.
