Samsung Plans To Open Chip Factory In Europe

According to sources close to the group, Samsung is considering building a new semiconductor plant in Europe. This would make the Korean group, alongside Intel, the second major manufacturer to invest in our continent in order to expand chip production capacities.

According to a report by the Korean Economic Daily, Samsung Electronics is currently exploring the possibility of building a new manufacturing facility for advanced semiconductor products in Europe. The magazine relies on the usual sources from the industry and also claims that Samsung also wants to work more closely with third-party manufacturers in order to have them take over part of its production orders.

Samsung is reportedly considering building a new chip plant in Europe because the EU has been trying for some time to turn the continent back into a more manufacturing location. So far, only Intel and a few smaller manufacturers have made such commitments, although the world’s largest chip contract manufacturer, TSMC, has so far not been persuaded to expand into Europe.

Intel is building Plants Already

Intel, on the other hand, is building new plants in Germany and Italy with state support, so such a project should also appear attractive for Samsung’s semiconductor division. According to the report, Samsung’s own economic consultancy Samsung Securities is also convinced that the Korean giant should build a chip factory in Europe in order to consolidate its position as a supplier to the automotive industry.

So far, Samsung has only operated its own factories at three locations in South Korea and two locations in the USA, where it is active as a contract manufacturer. However, the talk about the possible construction of a new chip factory in Europe is still speculation, because there are no concrete indications of corresponding plans.
