Samsung transfers several patents to Huawei in the US

A few hours ago we reported that Huawei has licensed some of its main 5G technologies to Samsung. As of now, it is reported that Samsung has shifted some of its patents to Huawei in the US. This seems to be a part of the cross-licensing deal between the Chinese company Huawei and the South Korean firm Samsung.

Almost 98 patents have been transferred to Huawei by Samsung. Whereas in 2019, around 81 patents were transferred to the Chinese firm. So those numbers now total around 179 patents shared between the two companies. A few years ago both firms decided to move on and end the dispute over patents. This sharing and transfer of patents is a part of the cross-licensing deal between Huawei and Samsung. The patents that have been transferred to Huawei by Samsung comprise of display technologies, smartphone cameras, charging, and telecommunication technologies.

Given such cross-licensing deals, it might sometimes happen that one company has to contribute more compared to the other. It is due to the number and quality of patents. Initially, the dispute over patents between the two firms begin with telecommunication-related technologies. Huawei had more patents in telecommunication technology in contrast to Samsung. Just a similar case is with Microsoft and Xiaomi. They have signed a cross-licensing deal. Concerning this agreement, Microsoft has a much bigger contribution compared to Xiaomi.

A few years back Huawei was one of the prime competitors of Samsung concerning smartphones. Now its sales are just limited to China and some European countries. This is due to the sanctions imposed by the US on Huawei given the cybersecurity concerns. Because of the trade ban, Huawei is looking for other ways to increase its revenue. Cros-licensing deals with other firms are a part of this strategy. Reportedly Huawei has signed a cross-licensing deal with OPPO and 19 other companies, including Samsung.
