Tesla is preparing the European launch of the Tesla Semi electric truck. In September, the company finally provided precise performance data. However, a crucial hurdle threatens to completely slow down the vehicle’s late success on the local market.
Tesla Semi: European launch is getting closer
Two years ago, the US car manufacturer Tesla presented its electric semi-trailer Semi at the IAA Transportation commercial vehicle trade fair in Hanover. The company will return there in mid-September. The plan is to publish the technical specifications for the European market as well as specific information about the market launch. So far, Tesla has remained tight-lipped about the European data. Due to regional regulations regarding weight and dimensions, the truck differs from the US version. The responsible engineer, Dan Priestley, had already accompanied test drives in Hanover two years ago. Fleet operators should now find out when and in which configurations the Semi will be available in Europe.
Technical data for the EU market
Like the portal Tesla Mag reported that the adaptations to the truck comply with current regulations. There were preliminary references to a medium-range version on regional websites. The data sheet states a total train weight of 40 tons and a range of around 550 kilometers. Three motors on the rear axles should deliver up to 800 kilowatts. Energy consumption should be around one kilowatt hour per kilometer. With the megawatt charging system, the battery can be charged to 60 percent in 30 minutes. However, the first deliveries in Europe are not expected until 2027 at the earliest. Initially, Tesla serves the US market. The logistics company Einride recently ordered 500 vehicles there.
Tough competition and infrastructure
In Europe, the Semi will join established suppliers such as Daimler Truck, MAN and Volvo, who already sell electric trucks. The charging infrastructure will play an important role. The European Union is obligating its member states to equip at least half of the trans-European transport network with charging points for heavy electric commercial vehicles by the end of 2027.

2017 November 16th Tesla announces the all-electric heavy-duty truck Semi and promises a range of up to 500 miles (around 800 km). The start of production is initially announced for 2019.

There are currently no confirmed prices for Europe. In the USA, the basic model costs around 260,000 US dollars (around 222,000 euros). The variant with a larger battery and a range of 800 kilometers costs 290,000 US dollars (around 248,000 euros). The vehicles are manufactured in a factory in the US state of Nevada. It is designed for an annual production of 50,000 units.
