The Witcher: CD Projekt is reportedly planning a new multiplayer game

The Witcher universe is expanding. In addition to new main games, a free multiplayer adventure for PC and smartphones is apparently also in development. Players should create their own sorcerers and hunt monsters together.

New adventure in the Witcher universe

CD Projekt Red has just announced a new expansion for the now eleven-year-old Witcher 3. They are also working on several other projects related to the Witcher franchise. Now a leak has revealed information about a previously unknown title. The world of The Witcher will reportedly be expanded to include a cooperative multiplayer adventure. According to reports, a corresponding free-2-play game for PC and mobile devices is in development. The framework story is said to be set in the year 1230. Instead of slipping into the role of Geralt of Rivia, who was still young at the time, users create their own character. As part of individual missions, players hunt various monsters in dense forests, abandoned ruins or villages. If you want to be successful, you have to master dodging, parrying and the targeted use of magic and potions.

Game still in early stages

The game concept should be comparable in scope to other cross-platform titles such as Horizon Steel Frontiers. As MP1st reports, the project could be created in collaboration with the Scopely studio. CD Projekt Red announced a partnership with the company specializing in mobile games last year. Scopely has already been responsible for smartphone implementations of well-known licenses in the past. However, an imminent release is unlikely as development is still in its early stages. A market launch before 2027 is largely ruled out. CD Projekt Red has repeatedly emphasized in the past that it wants to integrate the multiplayer aspect into the existing portfolio, after previous attempts were often rejected internally.

Opportunities in the mobile market

Expanding the brand to smartphones brings with it opportunities and risks. While the card adaptation Gwent was quite successful, the mobile-only game The Witcher Monster Slayer from 2021 failed. The augmented reality project was discontinued after just two years. A multiplayer RPG could appeal to a wider audience and generate long-term revenue to fund future single-player projects from the Polish studio. Still, many long-time supporters express concerns. The main games in the series are characterized by a dense atmosphere and deep stories. It remains to be seen how well the established universe can be integrated into a concept designed for cooperative gameplay with probably fewer story elements and how fans will receive it.
