Windows 10 May 2020 Update Brings More Problems

Windows 10 update problems

The Windows 10 May 2020 update was released three weeks ago. After numerous bugs occurred shortly after the release, the list of known problems has now been extended again. Some users had space management issues.

This comes from a report from Windows Latest. Windows 10 version 2004 seems to cause some users that the “Manage storage space” function no longer works properly. With the feature, data can be stored on multiple data carriers and thus protected against a drive failure. The affected users only see an error message when creating a new pool.

The defragmentation tool also causes problems. When optimizing a drive, the correct date of the last scan started is sometimes not saved. This incorrectly warns the user that the last scan was too far behind and the drives should be optimized.

Fresh Start is not working correctly

With Fresh Start, Windows 10 users have the option of installing a clean Windows installation and removing personal files and programs from the computer. The function proves to be particularly useful on PCs on which Bloatware is included. How Techdows notes, the feature is preparing for the implementation of the May 2020 update many users problems.

Usually, the computer is restarted after the start button has been clicked. With Windows 10 version 2004, the user is instead only redirected to the associated support page. Entry was made in the Feedback Hub eight months ago to point out the problem. Apparently the error was ignored.

In addition to the now known problems, the Windows 10 May 2020 update also contains many other errors. Almost a week ago, a whole list of errors appeared. In addition, some bugs have been found in combination with Lenovo devices. This mainly includes driver problems and malfunctioning hotkeys. It remains to be seen when the problems will be fixed and a patch will be released.

  1. The problems with the Windows 10 2004 updates are not limited to Lenovo machines. Dell PCs and laptops are also affected. Specifically we have a number of XPS machines that earlier in June rolled out the 2004 update and then suffered huge issues including printers that were simply removed without warning, icons dissappearing from the desktop, exceptionally sluggish behaviour, freezing after an hour or so of use, apps simply not starting properly, prompts that licensing on Microsoft Office apps was invalid, and more. The licensing issue was resolved by enabling the software protection service, but this is the kind of thing that would appear to be a rookie error (disabled for testing, but failed to re-enable when compiling the update release)… and not the kind of thing we would expect from Microsoft. The whole Windows 10 2004 update process has been a nightmare for us and we have spent more time on trying to fix this, rollbacks, re-images, etc than anything else in the last 2 weeks or so. Microsoft needs to fix this and FAST. Confidence is waning and its getting pretty frustrating.
