Windows 10 New Update Adds Backup App And Numerous Bug Fixes

Microsoft provides a new optional update for Windows 10 with patch KB5029331. Among other things, the Redmond-based company is introducing the backup app known from Windows 11 and new functions for the Microsoft account. There are also a number of bug fixes.

More new features for Windows 10

Build 19045.3393 (KB5029331) for Windows 10 Version 22H2 is now available as a non-security update. The patch is still considered a preview and must be downloaded manually via the Windows Update menu. The automatic installation will then follow on Patch Day on September 13th.

In the official changelog see below, Microsoft focuses on five improvements. The detection of your own location has been improved to optimize news, weather, and traffic information. In addition, notifications about the Microsoft account are now handled via the Start menu, for example in relation to security settings and to manage subscriptions.

Backup app now available with cloud backup

The introduction of the Windows Backup app is not advertised as a highlight but can be found high up in the patch notes of the Windows 10 update. Previously, the data backup solution known from Windows 11 could already be seen in insider versions, now the official distribution follows.

The backup takes place via the cloud and includes personal data, in particular OneDrive folders, Microsoft Store apps, system settings, and login information. However, a full backup, such as that created with various third-party programs (e.g. AOMEI or Macrium ), does not replace Windows cloud synchronization.

• This update supports daylight saving time in Israel.
• This update fixes an issue that affects the display of the search box.
• This update fixes an issue affecting settings. They won’t sync even if you turn on the option on the Windows Backup page in the Settings app.

More improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. If you install this KB:

• New: This update adds the Windows Backup app to your device.
• This update fixes an issue that affects the Group Policy service. It doesn’t wait 30 seconds, which is the default wait time, for the network to become available. In view of this, policies are not processed correctly.

• This update fixes an issue affecting an app that simulates keystrokes. This app may not send Japanese characters to other apps.

• This update fixes an issue affecting print jobs sent to a virtual print queue. They fail without an error message.
• This update fixes an issue affecting hard drive partitions. The system may stop working. This occurs when you delete a hard drive partition and add the space of the deleted partition to an existing BitLocker partition.
• This update fixes an issue affecting Remote Desktop (RD) sessions. The connection drops when multiple applications are in use.
• This update fixes an issue affecting the Resultant Set of Policy (RSOP). The Windows LAPS policy setting “BackupDirectory” was not reported. This occurs when the setting is set to 1, which means “back up in the AAD”.
• This update fixes a known issue affecting ClickOnce. Apps that you deployed with ClickOnce may be prompted to install. This occurs even if the ClickOnce apps are already installed and marked as “trusted”.
• The update addresses an issue affecting those using Windows Update for Business. After you are prompted to change your password at login, the change process fails. Then you cannot log in. The error code is 0xc000006d.
