World of Warcraft: Admin uses cheat for friends

In World of Warcraft (WoW), a game master abused his extensive privileges to give friends an unfair advantage in a challenging dungeon. The incident was discovered and had drastic consequences.

Dismissal after serious fraud

One of Blizzard’s Game Masters was helping a friendly group of players in a high-level dungeon. He instantly killed enemy bosses in the Xena Nexus Point using a special developer spell. After the incident became known, the company immediately took action and dismissed the employee without notice. In addition, the players involved must expect severe penalties for their behavior. The incident occurred in a so-called Mythic Plus dungeon (M+) on the very high difficulty level 23.

Such instances are designed for a hard time limit and exactly five participants. Successful completion earns players exclusive titles and coveted rewards at the end of a season. In order to avert an impending failure in the important phase, the group called the friendly Game Master for help, who intervened directly in the game.

Protocols convict the perpetrators

The fraud was exposed because the exact combat data of the run was permanently stored on the external analysis platform Warcraftlogs. A sixth participant suddenly appeared there. The person used the “Area Death” command, which is inaccessible to normal users. The powerful spell instantly kills all enemies within a 30 meter radius. Additional statements from the people involved in various live streams confirmed the emerging suspicion.

As Blizzard said in an official statement announced internal analyzes confirmed the community’s allegations. The use of developer tools on the regular servers is strictly limited and is only used for troubleshooting. Every use of the commands is recorded in detail by a security team. It is therefore very certain that the incorrect actions were limited to a single person and that no other employees were involved.

Trust in the competition

The quick intervention by the developers has been positively received by many users. At the same time, the incident has permanently damaged trust in the game’s competitive scene. If it remains unclear whether top performance was achieved legitimately or manipulated by internal helpers, the entire competition loses significantly in value. It remains to be seen whether uninvolved players who may have accidentally gotten into the affected dungeon via group search will also be banned. The expulsion sends a signal, but the damage to fair competition remains.
