PS5 sound: New PlayStation Pulse headsets bring better bass
Sony is expanding its audio portfolio for the PS5 with two new wireless headsets. The PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge models rely on planar magnetic drivers for precise sound and also offer a parallel Bluetooth connection.
New PS5 headphones introduced
Sony is launching two new wireless headsets for the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation Pulse and the Pulse Edge. The peripherals will be released at the end of 2026 and are aimed at players who value precise sound. Both models use planar magnetic drivers, which were integrated into the ecosystem through the acquisition of the audio brand Audeze. This is intended to enable precise spatial location in games. For physical reasons, planar magnetic drivers offer a fast membrane response time. But this doesn’t just have advantages: the design of many headphones on the market results in a higher weight.
The standard version uses four magnets per driver. A special feature of the new series is the PlayStation Link technology. The technology ensures lossless audio transmission with very low latency. Users can connect the headsets to the PS5, PlayStation Portal, a PC or a Mac. At the same time, a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone can be maintained, for example to receive calls. As the manufacturer said in a post on the PlayStation Blog reports, the integrated microphones have AI-supported noise cancellation. The design has also been revised. The ear cups can now be folded flat, making transport easier. Both variants are available in the colors White and Midnight Black.
Pulse Edge delivers more bass and ANC
The more expensive Pulse Edge model doubles the number of magnets to eight per driver. According to Sony, this should ensure significantly deeper bass without affecting the clarity of the tones. The Edge model also offers active noise cancellation to block out disturbing ambient noise. A removable boom microphone is included for voice chat.
If the microphone is removed, the system uses a hidden replacement microphone. The premium headset also has controls for the game chat balance directly on the ear cup as well as an analog jack connection. Sony also supplies the Pulse Edge with a matching protective case and uses higher quality materials than in the standard version.
Prices and availability of the headsets
The standard model is scheduled to appear in selected markets during the 2026 holiday season. The Pulse Edge will follow in early 2027. The company has not yet communicated official prices. For orientation: The previous model Pulse Elite cost around 129 euros when it was introduced, while the Audeze Maxwell 2 is offered for around 285 euros.
