Movement in the messenger market
The integration of RCS into the Apple ecosystem came after years of hesitation by the Californian company. The company defended its closed iMessage system for a long time. A disadvantage of the current implementation is that the security feature is still in beta. The original SMS standard celebrated its premiere over three decades ago. Back then, sending text messages was limited to 160 characters. As the mobile Internet continued to develop, classic short messages were increasingly replaced by Internet-based services.
RCS is intended to close the gap and reduce dependence on third-party providers by anchoring modern chat functions natively in the operating system. Aside from the major manufacturers, developers of alternative operating systems are also working on the technology. The team behind the data protection-focused GrapheneOS plans to integrate the RCS standard directly into its own messaging app in the future. This should allow users to seamlessly exchange photos, videos and group chats with Android and iOS users without having to rely on proprietary Google services.
