Highly secure Android: Motorola Signature 27 officially receives GrapheneOS
The “safe” Android variant GrapheneOS will soon be officially available for the first time on devices from a major smartphone manufacturer. Now the developers have revealed that they are starting with the Motorola Signature 27.
Developers confirm first non-Pixel model
It has been known for some time that GrapheneOS, which stands out from regular Android due to its strong focus on the highest possible security and privacy protection, will be offered pre-installed on Motorola smartphones ex works. Now the plans are becoming more concrete. The developers behind GrapheneOS had already made it clear that their operating system would be used on high-end Motorola devices.
Shortly after introducing the Motorola Signature 27, the team announced that this model will be the first device to officially offer support for GrapheneOS. So far, “secure Android” is only available for Google’s Pixel smartphones, without official support being offered.
It is unclear when and how GrapheneOS will come to Motorola
In an answer to a question from a user on X/Twitter, the makers of GrapheneOS explained that the Motorola Signature 27 will actually be the first supported device. But this could still take some time, because at the same time the developers made it clear that they only want to officially reveal details about the plans for Motorola’s new top smartphone later.
With the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, the Motorola Signature 27 apparently meets all the requirements that GrapheneOS places on the hardware. Above all, this includes long support, because Motorola wants to provide updates for the device for seven years. Secure Element integration and hardware memory tagging are also supported, which are basic requirements for using GrapheneOS. Technically, Motorola’s new top smartphone has a lot to offer.
The device has a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 165 Hertz and a resolution of 2780 x 1264 pixels. Two 50-megapixel cameras are also installed for normal and ultra-wide-angle shots, with Motorola providing a 200-megapixel camera with five times optical magnification.
Other features include a housing with a metal frame, a speaker system optimized by the Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen and a 7000 mAh battery that can be quickly charged with up to 90 watts via cable and up to 50 watts wirelessly. It is still unclear when and at what prices Motorola will bring the device onto the market.
