Oppo New Clamshell Folding Design Patent Reveals Design Renders
Oppo has not yet launched into the foldable smartphone market, but like all manufacturers that have yet to make the leap, it is working on various possibilities. And apparently, the form factor on which it seems more oriented is the clamshell one, in the style of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr: we had already seen it in the latest patent, which however overturned the fold externally.
The solution we see today, however, registered by WIPO, is more conventional: the screen actually folds inward. What is striking about the illustrations is the quantity and quality of the details, especially as regards the engineering of the hinge, which seems to be the real protagonist of the patent: it could be the indication of a project on which Oppo is seriously focusing.
In terms of design, in reality, the very flat and thin profile could distinguish it from the competition and brings it closer in impact – especially when closed – to Microsoft’s Surface Duo. No “Flex Mode” in the style of Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2, that is the possibility of freely tilting the screen: in the case of the Oppo device, the angles in which it will be possible to block the display are four, that is 30, 60, 90 and 120 degrees.
In the renderings made from the patent by Letsgodigital colleagues, we can see the sketches come to life, and get an idea of how a clamshell foldable by Oppo and based on this design could be. Which, we repeat, seems purely indicative: the cameras in the renderings, for example, are additions of fantasy. In the document, only a device without particular details appears, and therefore it really seems that the real object of the patent is the hinge.
