Windows Explorer Crashes After Windows 10 October Update
Bugs come along with the new updates quite often and that is what happened with a new Windows 10 October patch. After the patch day at the beginning of October, more and more users are reporting problems that occur under Windows 10. Especially with version 1909, there are frequent problems with the file explorer, which simply freezes and crashes and is therefore unusable, according to the latest reports.
After researching the relevant forums, Microsoft support documents, and Microsoft Answers, the picture is very clear: users have massive problems with the patches KB4579311 for Windows 10 version 2004 and KB4577671 for Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909, which restrict normal work with the PC.
Users report further problems
We had already reported an error that could lead to the computer crashing with the Blue Screens of Death. Now there is also a “smaller” problem – only the file explorer crashes, which many users find really annoying and thus cannot carry out their regular work on the PC.
According to Windows Latest, this Explorer bug manifests itself in very different ways. One affected user writes: “The KB4579311 update causes Explorer to stop responding after restarting. My start menu and notification screen do not respond for at least 20 minutes before they work normally.” So far there is no remedy, at least it is not in sight. Those affected report that the optional update for Windows 10 2004 and 20H2, which has now been released, does not yet fix the error.
1909 and 1903 also affected
Similar problems after the latest Windows Patch Day with the file explorer also exist with KB4577671, which is delivered for the Windows 10 versions released last year. Other versions do not appear to be affected, or the relevant messages are simply missing because the older versions are no longer widely used. A solution for the errors that occurred after the patch day is currently not in sight.
Uninstall only as a last resort
The recommendation to uninstall the last patch in the event of serious errors only applies if you actually notice excessive restrictions – because then the system will be without the latest security updates.
