New PS5 Firmware Update Fixes HDR, 120Hz And Samsung TV Issues

The big April update is now available for download for the PlayStation 5. Sony fixes, among other things, problems that occurred in connection with HDR content, 120 Hz support and Samsung TVs and enables the use of USB hard drives.

With the latest firmware update, the Japanese manufacturer is updating its next-gen console to version 21.01-03.00.00, for which an official changelog is now available. This not only results in the previously announced changes to memory expansion with the help of USB hard drives but also various problem solutions in the area of HDR and 120 Hz functionality. Among other things, it is now possible to deactivate the Auto-HDR option for content without a high dynamic range.

Previously, gamers had to find that the PS5 in combination with a 1080p monitor or television resulted in errors regarding 120Hz operation. This is now working correctly and can be activated in the corresponding settings. We are also receiving positive news from the Samsung Community. Owners of a smart TV from the company have not been able to use the PlayStation 5 in combination with high 4K resolution, 120Hz and HDR since its release. The problem should already be solved in March, but after a long wait, it is now part of the current April update.

Earlier this week, Sony continued to confirm intergenerational share play between PS4 and PS5 players to share their screens with friends and virtually hand over the controller. Likewise, users can now use the “Request to Join” function to join their friends’ game sessions. There are also improvements to the Game Base, voice chat within games, advance downloads and updates, and the trophy system. The following patch notes summarize the new functions.

You can now save PS5 games to the extended USB storage.

To move PS5 games from console storage to extended USB storage, open the options menu for the PS5 game you want to move on your Home screen or in your games library, then select Move to the extended USB storage.
To play PS5 games that are located in the extended USB storage, open the games library and copy the game to the console storage via the “Options” menu. Copying games is faster than downloading them again. It is also faster than reinstalling games from a disc if the game has add-ons in extended USB storage or has been updated.

Share play, zoom function, game chat and game base

You can now use Share Play with players on PS4 consoles. With Share Play, you can invite your friends with PS4 consoles to watch you play, or even give them control.
We have added a zoom function to our accessibility features. With the zoom you can enlarge the display on your screen. Activate this function under Settings> Accessibility> Display> Zoom.
We added the Disable Game Chat Audio feature in the Control Center under Sound. If you enable this setting, no one can hear your voice in game chats, and neither can you hear other players. This setting does not apply to party voice chat.
You can now more easily access current parties and see who of your friends is online. Use the R1 and L1 buttons to quickly switch between tabs.
You can now enable or disable notifications for any of your parties.
You can now adjust the volume of other players’ voices in party voice chat, as well as in game chat for some games. In the Control Center, select a player on the voice chat card to adjust their volume.

Profiles, game libraries, HDMI options and parental controls

It’s now easier than ever to share your favourite moments from your games. Under the Shared tab, select Go to Media Gallery, then select the media you want to share.
We have separated videos and broadcasts in the Shared tab to make things easier.
You can now manage all the games you follow under Settings> Saved Data and Game / App Settings> Manage Games I Follow. This way, you can stop following games without going to individual news stories or game hubs.
For displays that support the HDMI device connection function, you can now activate or deactivate one-touch play and the power-off function for each device individually. Open Settings> System> HDMI to change these settings.
If one-touch play is enabled, turning on the PS5 console will also turn on the connected screen.
If the power-off feature is enabled, the PS5 will go into sleep mode when the connected screen is turned off.
You can now set the country or region in the parental controls settings for PS5 console users and guests who are not signed in to PlayStation Network.
The country or region determines the age rating applied to the PS5 games and apps. To change a user’s country or region, go to Settings> Family & Parental Controls, select the user, then select PS5 under Games and Apps Age Level.
You can also pre-set the country or region for new users and guests on your PS5 console. To do this, go to Settings> Family & Parental Controls> PS5 Console Restrictions> Parental Controls for New Users> PS5.
You can now hide games in the games library. When you hide a game, it will no longer appear in the Your Collection tab.
To hide a game, go to the Your Collection tab and open the game’s options menu, then select Hide.
To show hidden games, open the Your Collection tab in your game library, select the Sort and Filter menu, and then activate Hidden Items.
To show a game, activate the Hidden Items filter, open the options menu for the game you want to show, and then select Show.
Games that you have hidden on your PS4 console will also be hidden on your PS5 console.

Data management, topha, 120Hz and HDR options

When you start or resume a PS5 game, your console will check the cloud storage for newer saved data. If there is more recently saved data in the cloud storage, you can choose whether you want to synchronize the data.
It’s now easier to manage your saved data right from the home screen. When you open the options menu for a game, you will now see the options Upload / Download Saved Data and Check Saved Data Sync Status.
We now support more emojis.
You can now access screenshots and videos taken the moment you earned a trophy. Select an earned trophy to view its associated media.
You can now choose which trophies you want to save screenshots and videos for. To change these settings, go to Settings> Recordings & Broadcasts> Trophies.
Now when you select a hidden trophy, you can hit the square button to quickly reveal hidden information.
You can now switch to a game’s trophy list directly from a trophy card by selecting To Trophies from the options menu.
Once you’ve selected a sorting order for your trophies, your trophies will remain sorted in that order for all games.
You can now view your trophy stats by pressing the square button on the Trophies screen.
If you now sort your trophies according to their rarity or according to “Received on”, the rarity or the date will be displayed on the trophy cards.
When you install this update, the Enable Chat Transcription option will be disabled in Accessibility Settings. If you want to use the chat transcription function, enable this setting again.
You can now use the multitasking icon on a card to view information about the available multitasking modes: picture-in-picture, pin to a page, or both.
We added a button map that shows you how to interact with the map, which is currently in multitasking mode.
You can now view the battery level of your wireless controller in the Control Center.
You can now find the latest promotions, including offers for subscribers to PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now and EA Play, in the Game or Subscription Hub. To view the options that are not shown in the hub, select… (more options).
If you play a game that you have hidden via Hide games from other players in your privacy settings, other players will not see any information about the game you are currently playing in addition to your online status.
Some PC monitors that can display 1080p / 120Hz now support 120Hz display for games. If you’re having trouble viewing your game at 120 Hz, go to Settings> Screen and Video> Video Output, then check the Enable 120 Hz Output option.
You can now optionally switch the video output to non-HDR if a game or app does not support HDR. You can change this setting under Settings> Screen and Video> Video Output> HDR.
