AMD Showcases Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs at CES 2023

Chip manufacturer AMD is using CES 2023 to present three new X3D models from its Ryzen 7000 family. In the battle for Intel’s gaming crown, the CPUs Ryzen 9 7590X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and Ryzen 7 7800X3D with 120 watts TPD and 64 MB 3D V-Cache will start in February 2023.

Despite a large number of new notebook processors, the eyes of many gamers are primarily focused on the new Zen 4 CPUs with AMD’s 3D V-Cache. About a year and a half passed between the presentation of the Ryzen 5000X chips and their X3D variant, those interested in the Ryzen 7000 family don’t have to wait nearly as long now. The three new CPUs are to be sold as early as February. The prices have not yet been determined.

3D V-Cache for one chiplet, 120 Watt TPD, and benchmarks

Technically, all Ryzen 7000X3D processors rely on a 64 MB 3D V-Cache, which is installed on a chiplet. This also applies to the new Ryzen 9 7590X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D, which theoretically have two chiplets. This is accompanied by the usually slightly lower clock rates in Turbo, which only show up to a limited extent on the datasheet of the Ryzen 9 offshoots (5.7 GHz and 5.6 GHz), since one of the two chiplets can still fully exploit its performance. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D (5.0 GHz) loses almost 400 MHz compared to the Ryzen 7 7700X (5.4 GHz).

The new X3D CPUs achieve a maximum power consumption (TDP) of 120 watts. An increase in the Ryzen 7 segment (105 watts), a limitation for the Ryzen 9 chips (170 watts). Since current Ryzen 9 7000X processors cannot use their available budget in games according to independent tests, 120 watts and efficient use of the 3D V-Cache should easily be enough to displace Intel’s Core i9-13900K as the top dog. When fully loaded in productive applications, however, the gaming processors are likely to lag behind their X variants.

Finally, AMD speaks about the first (manufacturer’s own) benchmarks. Compared to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the new Ryzen 7 7800X3D is said to deliver 20 to 30 percent more 1080p performance. Rainbow Six Siege, CS:GO, DOTA 2, and Warhammer: Dawn of War 3, among others, were tested. AMD, on the other hand, compares the Ryzen 9 7950X3D flagship directly with the Intel Core i9-13900K, which is beaten by 13 to 24 percent in the same scenario target. However, independent test reports and benchmarks remain to be seen.
