Counter-Strike 2 Will Not Run On Macs And Older Windows PCs

Valve recently released Counter-Strike 2 and the new edition of the online shooter is proving to be very popular – even if there is criticism and the now-usual review bombing. Apart from that, Valve has now commented on the Mac issue.

Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) has been available for around two weeks and the game has already reached the top of the Steam charts – even if there is criticism from players and e-sports professionals about bugs, glitches, and missing modes and content. This resulted in CS2 becoming Valve’s worst-rated game. The gaming company shouldn’t have too much to worry about because review bombing is almost a kind of tradition and doesn’t always say anything about the actual quality of the game.

It’s likely that critics won’t diminish when they hear that Valve has removed support for some of the game’s platforms – although this won’t necessarily affect many. Valve has confirmed that, unlike its predecessor Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), Macs and older Windows PCs will not be supported.

Valve writes in a post: “Given the advances in technology, we have made the difficult decision to end support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Likewise, we will no longer support MacOS. Combined, these makeup less than one percent of active CS:GO players.” Specifically, this means that Counter-Strike 2 will only support 64-bit Windows and Linux.

Valve also writes that anyone who cannot start Counter-Strike 2 with their current hardware can still access an older version of CS:GO. However, this has an expiration date, as support for this version will end on January 1, 2024. Anyone who recently had a Prime Status upgrade can request their money back in certain cases; details can be found in an FAQ on Steam.
