Microsoft Retires Outlook Lite: Lightweight Email App Removed from Play Store

Microsoft pulls the plug on Outlook Lite for Android. The slim email app with around five million downloads so far disappears from the Play Store. What does this mean for users of older smartphones?

Microsoft ended the Outlook Lite app for Android on October 6, 2025, as the group in a message in Message Center announced. From this date you can no longer be installed in the Google Play Store. Existing users can continue to use the application for a while before the service is finally switched off.

The decision is part of the strategy to concentrate all resources on the regular Outlook Mobile app. This is considered a central application for Android with a larger range of functions and better user experience. Microsoft therefore recommends switching to the full version, the development and support of which are continued.

Three years after the start is over

Outlook Lite was introduced in September 2022 to offer users with weaker Android devices or low data volume. At only 5 MB, the app is significantly smaller than the standard version (86 MB) and also ran reliably with 1 GB of RAM. With this, Microsoft aimed primarily on markets with older devices.

Outlook Lite supports basic functions such as emails, calendars and contacts. Initially, this was limited to an account, later Dark Mode, Multi-account support and Google account integration were added. Nevertheless, the lite version differs little from the full version, which gradually lost its original role as a resource-saving alternative.

Focus on the main application

The full-fledged Outlook Mobile app for Android is still being actively developed and receives updates with new functions, safety improvements and better integration into Microsoft 365 services. It also offers additional functions such as team integration and extended calendar options. The end for Outlook Lite is part of previous decisions: Microsoft stopped the OWA apps for iOS and Android in 2018 and also referred to Outlook Mobile.

The group consistently pursues the goal of maintaining fewer, but more powerful applications. For users who are looking for an easy alternative, the Outlook Web app remains in the browser. It does not need installation and saves storage space, but still offers similar functions to mobile use.
