Nvidia is reportedly planning to drastically cut production of its current GeForce RTX 4000 cards. This could drive up prices again before the release of the next GPU generation.
Recently, there have been repeated rumors about the release date of Nvidia’s new RTX 5000 series. After initially assuming that the new Blackwell graphics cards would be released this year, it was recently said that the next GPU generation would probably not come onto the market until 2025.
Regardless of the date, many buyers expect discounts on the RTX 4000 GPUs when the RTX 5000 cards are launched. But this could be the case, according to a report by the Taiwanese website United Daily News (via PC Games Hardware) will not happen. Apparently Nvidia is planning to massively limit production of the current generation in the near future.
Soon, only half as many graphics cards from the 4000 series will be produced as before. A 50 percent reduction in production would result in a significant shortage. This means that prices might not only not fall, but might even rise again. The mid- and high-end models from the Geforce RTX 4070 upwards are said to be particularly affected.
Nvidia may want to ensure that the warehouses are empty by the time the RTX 5000 series is launched. After all, selling off older, cheaper cards would reduce the attractiveness of the new generation. Nevertheless, Nvidia must be careful not to shut down production too early. If there is a serious and prolonged shortage of supply, this could play into the hands of competitor AMD. This is particularly the case with the Geforce RTX 4070.
This is because only the absolute high-end models of the new generation are to be launched initially. The RTX 5060, which is to replace the 4070, is unlikely to follow until much later. It remains to be seen whether the report will prove true. Nevertheless, anyone who wants to upgrade their system soon should already consider the fact that there may not be any cheap RTX 4000 cards when the new Blackwell GPUs are launched.
