The Korean manufacturer presented its new flagship Galaxy Note 20 yesterday, plus the Galaxy Z Fold 2 folding smartphone. But there was also “soft” news on the subject of smartphones, above all the announcement of longer update periods.
At yesterday’s unpacked event, Samsung presented a lot of new hardware, but thanks to numerous leaks in advance, there were practically no surprises to be found. Nevertheless, there was also interesting information to be found that had not been made known in advance, above all the announcement of an extension of the provision of Android updates.
Because the Koreans have announced that some Samsung smartphones will receive “three generations” of updates in the future. However, this does not apply to all models, only more recent models such as the Galaxy S20 and the Note 20 series.
“Generations” refer to the major versions of the Google operating system. Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 will, therefore, receive updates to Android 11, Android 12, and Android 13, plus three years of monthly and quarterly security updates.
The “three-generation” promise also applies retrospectively, because the Galaxy S10 devices will also get Android 12 and not only Android 11 as previously thought. Samsung told The Verge that this would apply to the S, N, and Z series This will be the case with the A devices “as long as the hardware allows it”.
This is certainly an interesting change in the updated policy on the part of Samsung because so far there has been supporting for new firmware versions (as with most other manufacturers) only for two years, in the third year there are also quarterly security updates. With this step, Samsung is certainly trying to address its previously bad update image and that can definitely be described as successful because recently you have also become faster in the time it takes to provide updates.
