MacBook Ultra on the way: These are Apple’s new laptop plans

Apple breaks with an iron principle when designing its notebooks. The MacBook Ultra planned for this year will not only have an extremely bright tandem OLED display, but will also offer a touchscreen for the first time. These are the new plans.
Apple is planning a new high-end notebook
The US company is preparing to release a completely redesigned laptop for the third quarter of 2026. The device, often referred to as the MacBook Ultra, is said to be equipped with a new type of OLED screen and could be presented at the same time as the new iPhones in September. The company is breaking the publication cycle of previous years. The Ultra model is expected to have screens in slightly larger sizes of 14.3 and 16.3 inches. According to experts, the future processors of the M6 generation will serve as the drive. Observers also assume that Apple is integrating a touchscreen for the first time in the history of the Mac series. This is intended to differentiate the device more clearly from the previous Pro models.
OLED technology ensures efficiency
Like the market research company Omdia in a recent report analysis reported that Samsung Display is manufacturing the new panels. A hybrid OLED architecture will be used that combines oxide TFT and RGB tandem technology. This reduces power consumption compared to conventional OLED screens and at the same time increases the maximum brightness. Apple already uses a similar tandem OLED structure on the current iPad Pro. The transfer of technology to the laptop market could transform the entire sector. Experts predict that the market share of hybrid OLEDs in notebooks will increase from almost 13 percent in 2026 to almost 90 percent in 2033. This would push classic LCD panels out of the market in the long term.
Design adjustments to the MacBook
The energy-efficient screens allow Apple to make the MacBook Ultra case noticeably thinner. At the same time, the manufacturer is likely to say goodbye to the familiar notch at the top of the screen. Instead, a pill-shaped camera island should be used. The design is visually reminiscent of the Dynamic Island of the current iPhones and offers space for the Face ID sensors. There are currently no exact prices for the MacBook Ultra known. However, starting prices of over $2,000 are already expected. For comparison: a fully equipped MacBook Pro can now easily cost over $3,500. The integration of special hinges for the touchscreen and complex displays further increases production costs. Despite the positive forecasts for a launch in late summer 2026, analysts point to ongoing bottlenecks in RAM and storage components. Such delivery problems could lead to a postponement of the market launch until 2027. Apple must therefore secure the supply chains for the MacBook Ultra early on in order to be able to meet the ambitious schedule for mass production. A MacBook with a touchscreen and OLED display is a big step.
