iOS 15.2.1 Update: Apple fixes severe HomeKit DDoS vulnerabilities and more

Apple lends a hand with iOS and thus eliminates a HomeKit bug much later than originally planned. iOS 15.2.1 for iPhones and iPadOS 15.2.1 get rid of this critical error as well as a few annoying little things.

iOS 15.3 is delayed due to improvements in 15.2.1

Before Apple advances with its updates to the next version number according to the decimal point, the company pushes in a maintenance update again. For iPhones is now Version 15.2.1 Available for download, iPads will be updated with a new iPadOS edition under the same number. As always, the route leads via “Settings”> “General”> “Software update”. In the case of automatic updates, the new firmware should soon appear automatically on the devices. The build number is 19C63, the download is in the range of 950 MB.

The most important adjustment of 15.2.1 revolves around the serious HomeKit bug that we reported at the beginning of the month. A problem with extremely long names on HomeKit-compatible devices could cause iOS users to get stuck in an endless crash loop with iPhone and iPad. Security researcher Trevor Spiniolas made the breach public on January 1, but informed Apple about it in August. After that, Apple should actually have planned to eliminate the problem in 2021, but then postponed the corresponding patch from December to January.

Annoying bugs still around

In addition to the critical gap, classic maintenance work is also carried out with iOS and iPadOS 15.2.1. There were recently problems with images that were sent via iCloud link but could not be opened by the recipient. In addition, there were problems between third-party apps and Apple’s CarPlay service, which resulted in inputs not being registered.
