PlayStation 5: New update brings 1440p support and playlists

Sony has released a new firmware update for the PlayStation 5. With it, the Japanese are introducing the long-awaited support for 1440p resolutions, so the PS5 console is now also suitable for matching PC monitors. There are also new social and sound features.

After a beta phase of almost five weeks, 1440p support is finally available to the average consumer, who can now download firmware version 22.02-06.00.00 or have the update installed automatically. According to Sony, PC screens with QHD resolution and either 60 Hz or 120 Hz are supported. However, a variable refresh rate (VRR for short) is only possible for 1080p (FullHD) and 4K video output (UltraHD). In the PS5 settings, players can also have the 1440p suitability of the monitor tested and then manually select the native resolution.

More features for playlists, 3D audio, and social

PS5 owners can now create custom game lists within their game library, which is designed to make organizing titles easier. The new PlayStation 5 update currently allows for a total of 15 playlists with up to 100 titles per list. All games that appear in the Your Collection menu can be organized, including disc, digital, and streaming titles.

Furthermore, Sony allows a comparison between classic stereo sound and 3D sound within the headphone settings, so that gamers can quickly select a preferred option. In the area of social features, players are now also free to request screen sharing from party members, join their multiplayer sessions more easily and interact faster with friend profiles, stickers, and voice messages in the game base.
