Apple officially sold 3 billion iPhones

Apple has sold three billion iPhones since 2007 – but the speed even surprises experts. While the first billion nine years lasted, Apple only needed four years for the third.

Apple cracks three-billion mark

Apple has reached a historic milestone: Since the original iPhone in 2007, the group has been able to sell more than three billion iPhones. This number illustrates the extraordinary success story of the smartphone, which revolutionized the entire technology industry and made Apple the most valuable company in the world.

The continuous acceleration of sales is particularly noteworthy. Apple needed nine years for the first billion iPhones sold, only five years for the second billion and only four years for the third billion. This development shows how the iPhone has developed from a niche product to a mass market device.

iPhone 16 exceeds expectations

The number was announced on Thursday during the company’s balance sheet press conference for the third quarter, as Apple announced. “We have delivered the three-billionth iPhone since its introduction in 2007,” said Suhasini Chandramouli, Director of Investor Relations. The brand of one billion was confirmed in June 2016, the two-billion mark broken in autumn 2021. The current quarterly figures reflect on continuing success. Apple achieved sales of $ 85.8 billion (around 75.2 billion euros) and a profit of $ 21.4 billion (around 18.8 billion euros) – significantly above the values of the previous year’s quartal.

The iPhone generated sales of $ 46.2 billion (around 40.5 billion euros), which corresponds to an increase of six percent in the year. According to Tim Cook, the iPhone 16 currently sells significantly better than the iPhone 15 in the previous year – with “strong double -digit growth”. The new models are particularly popular with existing iPhone users who carry out an upgrade. The iPhone 16 family benefits from new AI functions and improved cameras.

Historical development and trivia

The first iPhone was presented on January 9, 2007 by Steve Jobs at the Macworld Conference & Expo and was launched in the USA on June 29, 2007. The starting price was $ 499 (the equivalent of around 437 euros) for the 4 GB version and $ 599 (about 525 euros) for the 8 GB variant. In Germany, the iPhone only started exclusively at T-Mobile in November 2007.

The iPhone has quickly developed into Apple’s most important product since the start of sales. For years, iPhone sales have been responsible for a large part of Apple’s sales and have made a significant contribution to the fact that Apple is now one of the largest companies in the world. Apple’s annual turnover has increased more than tenfold since the market launch of the iPhone.

Market position and competition

The global market shares of the iPhone are relatively constant in a range from twelve to 20 percent, with the highest market shares in the Christmas quarter. Samsung is said to have reached the three-billion mark as early as 2024, but with significantly more model variants than Apple, which traditionally only offers a few iPhone models a year.
